Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we package our product the way we do?

We need to wrap rolls to keep them moisture free and hygienic - unfortunately we can’t just put them in a cardboard box unwrapped. We’ve explored a number of other options—wrapping 6-packs in paper, wrapping the whole bunch in plastic, etc.—and wrapping each roll in paper made the most sense, economically, environmentally and from a design perspective. To fully compensate for the paper we’ve used, though, we’ve trimmed about 1mm off of each sheet of toilet paper—we bet you didn’t even notice!

What are the product specs?

Regular rolls are 200 sheets long and each sheet is 10x10cm. Each roll is about 10cm wide in diameter. Double Length Rolls are 400 sheets long, but but each roll is tightly wound which means that they are only 11.5cm in diameter - yes, they still fit in a regular toilet roll holder!

What's in our toilet paper?

All of our toilet paper is made from 100% recycled post-consumer waste paper (we primarily source from schools that are local to where we produce - think BPA free text books, work books, office paper, etc)! We don’t use any chlorine, inks, dyes or weird perfumes in our toilet paper. We just pulp the clean fibres at super high temperatures, ensuring that Who Gives A Crap stays biodegradable, safe in septic tanks and as strong as it is silky soft. And since it’s only tested on the finest human bottoms, our toilet paper is as good for your bum as it is for the planet.

Where is our toilet paper made?

We're an Australian-owned company, but our primary mission is to improve the lives of people in the developing world. With that in mind we choose to produce our toilet paper in China. We help to create jobs for our partners there instead of having a machine carry out the same task in Australia - which is the only feasible way to produce it locally. We’re the primary customer of a fairly small production facility so we’re able to closely monitor labor conditions, quality and environmental issues. Our Directors have personally overseen all production to date so we feel confident that we’re doing everything we can to ensure the integrity of our production. Our production partners have been so inspired by our work and cause that they’ve even donated to WaterAid themselves.

Why do we package our product the way we do?

Like every aspect of our toilet paper, we put a lot of thought into the packaging of our supermarket six roll packs. Although it may be unintuitive, we decided to use plastic instead of paper because it’s more environmentally friendly. Here’s why:

Shipping and selling a product in stores requires durable packaging, and the paper wrappers we use in our online products wouldn’t hold up. While it’s true that, per tonne, plastic is generally less environmentally sustainable than paper, to wrap the six rolls we’d need to use significantly more paper by weight to achieve the same outcome, because paper is heavier and nowhere near as strong as plastic. As a result, the environmental footprint of us using paper to wrap our six packs instead of plastic would actually be quite a bit higher.

To further reduce our footprint, we’ve made our plastic oxo-biodegradable to ensure it breaks down quickly in the natural environment and won’t end up stuck in waterways, oceans, parks or bushland. Check out the question below to find out more about our oxo-biodegradable plastic.

What is oxo-biodegradable plastic?

We’ve added a special compound called Reverte to the plastic outer packaging of our toilet paper, which makes it oxo-biodegradable. For those of you who weren’t chemistry whizzes at school (we certainly weren’t), oxo-biodegradable simply means that the plastic will oxidise and then degrade in the presence of oxygen and sunlight. This process is trigger by 4-8 hours of continuous exposure to sunlight or heat, after which the polymer chains in the plastic start to break down. Depending on the local environment, the entire wrapper will biodegrade, leaving no rubbish or harmful residue. This process takes approximately 12 to 24 months to complete (compared with up to 1,000 years for regular plastic). Pretty neat, we think.

How do I recycle my six pack?

Easy! Once you’ve made use of the inner core and colourful tissue paper wrappers, these can both be recycled in your normal neighbourhood rubbish recycling bin. Unfortunately most soft plastics, like our out wrapper, currently can’t be recycled in regular curbside recycling bins. Instead, it’s best to take them to a special plastic bag recycling bin, like those found at many supermarkets. Or, of course, you can leave it in your backyard to oxo-biodegrade.

Where do you deliver to?

Almost everywhere in Australia! We ship to almost all residential or business address in the country. However, it is a BIG country and there are a small number of places that we can’t ship to, please see this page for detailed info on our shipping rates and policies.

We also ship to PO Boxes in Melbourne only.

We send every order with an authority to leave so you don't have to be home to receive your box(es). Nominate a safe/dry drop spot in the 'where can we leave your order?' field before checkout.

This only applies for addresses well 'off the beaten path' so almost all regional customers will receive door-to-door shipping.

How long does delivery take?

Orders placed before 10am Monday to Friday are shipped same day, and are usually delivered in 1-3 business days in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and most of NSW.  Regional VIC orders are delivered to most areas every Tuesday and Friday. How do we safeguard your security when shopping online?

We know that for some people, shopping online can be a bit scary. Plus, there are plenty of hi-tech crooks out there looking to cause no end of trouble with your credit cards in particular! This is why we take our customers' web security very seriously.

All of our transactions are processed by Stripe through their secure online payments portal. Stripe is one of the leading global platforms for online payments processing and security is one of their top priorities. You can find more about their security measures here. Our staff don't even have access to the credit card details of our customers as these are retained and secured only by Stripe.

If you have any further security questions please let us know by emailing us at support@whogivesacrap.org.

How do you calculate the number of people you've provided sanitation access for?

WaterAid helps people gain access to adequate sanitation (including toilets and clean water) with a sustainable, proven range of programs. They work with local partners and help deliver practical solutions that are suitable for the communities in question. You can read more about their approach here.

We've worked with WaterAid to understand what these programs can cost, how long they last and how many people they usually reach. As a result it's possible to work out an average cost of helping to provide one person access to a toilet for an entire year. Using this figure, combined with our donation figures, we're able to work out how many people (in total) could be provided with a year's access to a toilet as a result of our donations.

How do I send you love letters?

We love getting love letters, you can send them to this address: 19 Fowler Road, Dandenong VIC 3175.

Got a question we haven't answered here?

We'd love to hear from you! Please email support@whogivesacrap.org to get in touch.
