Time to part-aaay

We’ve just made our biggest donation ever – taking our total donations in four years to $1,175,000!!!! We are SO thrilled, overjoyed and corybantic (great word) to share this news with you, because we couldn’t have done it without your help. So this toilet paper party (literally, it’s paper) is dedicated to you (and to our parents, our agent, Uncle Steve, Beyonce...‘insert the hurry up acceptance speech music’).

In all seriousness though, thank you. A few short years ago, Simon, our CEO and co-founder was personally delivering boxes of loo roll to people’s houses. Now, we have a fully fledged logistics operation servicing Australia as well as other parts of the world too (we’ve only just begun but it’s very exciting). We’ve gone from a team of two to 28...and counting! And most importantly, we’ve gone from our first donation of $2,500 to over a million dollars. This has all been done with the help of you, our most loyal, amazing, funny customers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

P.S. International friends – hi ya, howdy and bonjour. Our donation amount is in Aussie dollars because if you didn’t know it already, we’re an Australian company. G’day! When it comes to donating, we work out our profits from our international companies – then pay the donation from Australia. And no, we don’t use a kangaroo. Mostly because they’re unreliable.

Make this speech go viral. Seriously, we don’t mind.
Are we done building loos?

Are we done building loos?

No way! Despite our huge donation, we still have a long way to go. Unfortunately, 2.3 billion people in the world still don’t have access to a toilet. So we need to sell as much toilet paper (and as many tissues and paper towels) as possible to keep growing our impact.

Now, you might be wondering why we love toilets so much. The answer is simple. They’re one of our basic human needs (along with clean water and good hygiene education) that allow us live healthy lives. Poor sanitation causes serious illness and if people get sick, they can’t feed their families or go to school. The solution? You got it, toilets! That’s why we’ll keep donating half our profits to help build ‘em until everyone’s covered.

Loos for all!

Slicin' the toilet paper pie

We donate 50% of profits to our charity partners to help build toilets in developing countries. Now, you might be wondering why half of the pie? We use this business model because we believe it’ll be the most successful way to achieve our goal – of making sure everyone in the world has access to a toilet.

Donating 50% means we can invest almost all of the other 50% into growing the company. We want to hire more talented people, launch in new countries and continue to grow the company in a sustainable way, ensuring we’re around for a loooooong time. Billions of people still don’t have a loo, so we want to be smart about making sure we sell enough toilet paper to get toilets for everyone. On top of growing the number of people with access to toilets, it’s incredibly important for us to prove our profit-for-purpose business model can work. The more people see this, the more social enterprises like ours can get off the ground and do great things!

Our partners are magical

Our partners are magical

We’ve teamed up with some of the most experienced and innovative organisations around. They’re experts in what they do, so we donate unrestricted funds and let their teams on the ground decide what will make the best impact and difference to people’s lives. Our plan is to donate as much money as we can, to the organisations making the most impact. Just like these two below:

WaterAid Australia

We’ve worked with WaterAid Australia since the beginning of our toilet paper journey. You’ve probably heard of them as they’re a big international organisation – they know their stuff, they’re like The Godfather of sanitation. They work across Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific region. Their work focuses on bringing people access to clean water, decent toilets and educating communities about hand washing to prevent disease.

It’s easy to forget some people spend many hours collecting clean water for their families, or school children have to go to the toilet in the bush. But this isn’t supposed to make you feel guilty. When you know the problem, you can go about coming up with solutions and WaterAid Australia do exactly that. In 2015-2016, they helped 1.9 million people gain access to safe water and over 3 million people to decent sanitation. Go WaterAid Australia!

Sanergy

The team at Sanergy are doing some of the most innovative sanitation work around. They build and franchise waterless loos called Fresh Life Toilets in Nairobi’s slums (8 million residents lack access to safe and accessible sanitation – it is CROWDED...and there’s no sewerage system). Their toilets are used over 50,000 times a day and they’ve made an incredible difference to people’s lives.

But that’s not all. They then give waste an afterlife by collecting it and converting it into agricultural products for Kenyan farmers, predominantly organic fertilizer and animal feed. They turn human waste (OMG, a renewable resource!) into money which helps to subsidise the cost of building more toilets. This is magical! By doing this, not only are they providing a new source of income and even more toilets, but they prevent an average of 14 tonnes of waste from going into rivers and waterways each day. There are not enough emojis in the world to describe how great we think this is.

Crazy toilet facts

Crazy toilet facts

Whip these out next time you’re caught short for chit chat.

  • Did you know more people in the world have a mobile phone than a toilet? That’s just crazy.
  • Over the past 200 years, toilets have added 20 years onto the average human lifespan. Hats off, Mr Crapper.
  • We go to the loo roughly 2,500 times over a year. More if you’re really bored at work.
  • Most people wash their hands for 5 seconds (the recommended time is 15-30 seconds) Uh oh.
Get these facts to the world – stat!

Saving trees. Kapow!

You know when you see your parents writing cheques? Or someone throwing rubbish from a car window? You think, people are still doing that? That’s how we feel when we tell you that most people still wipe their bums with virgin trees.

Our toilet paper is made from either 100% recycled paper (mostly sourced from schools and offices local to our producer) or 100% bamboo fibres. The bamboo in our premium range is a brilliantly sustainable option. It grows superhero-y fast because it’s technically a grass. Bamboo can also grow with minimal tending, no irrigation or fertilisation and only needs to be harvested once a year. Beat that Batman!

2.3 billion is a freeeakin’ big number

As you might know, 2.3 billion people still don’t have access to a toilet. So our goal at Who Gives A Crap HQ is to make sure everyone on earth has access to a loo. Everything we do, every decision we make, ladders up to this goal. But we can’t do it without you. Yes, you! The more people you help us get onboard the toilet paper train, the more people we can help. So what do you say, are you with us? Tooooot toot!
